I originally started this project, because I was unhappy with other backup products out there. I needed something simple, something automatic, something that could work well with flash drives and still work on external hard drives. One of the things I really disliked was the use of images for backups. This means that all of your files are saved in one large file, compressed. This backup is not easily accessible; you have to launch the backup software to do any restoration. It really didn't become as important to me until my hard drive died. I got much of my data off - but it took weeks of trying to finally copy the data off. That's when I started "Cobalt Backup."
Cobalt Backup is a simple to use application that can automatically save your personal data to a flash drive, internal or external hard drive, and in a way that's easy to get back to later. No compression is used. The saved files can be opened from your backup destination (flash drive) just as easily as they were opened on the hard drive in your computer.

Folders can easily be added to your backup. Cobalt supports quick buttons for adding folders that contain Outlook, Outlook Express, My Documents, Desktop, My Pictures, and others.

It's easy to determine what's going on with your backups. An icon in the notification area (Windows 7 shown) changes if you have an alert (missed backup), if a backup is in progress, or if Cobalt is idle.

If a problem occurs you can check for Alerts. This will show if a backup did not complete or if there is a problem with a backup. You can ignore the backup or select "Fix." If you want more advanced details like what file did not backup then you can select the "Log" feature from the main windows of Cobalt Backup.

You can customize your backup to be very flexible. A backup can be set to backup every hour, every day, once a week, once a month, etc. You can also set when the backup starts for the first time.
Some files can be set to not backup by setting exclusions for certain extensions or you can choose to only backup files with certain extensions.
To choose a backup destination you can type in the path or easily select the drive you want using the Browse links. If you select "Use this drive even if the driver letter changes." the backup will know this flash drive even if it's drive letter changes.
