Windows Logo (TM) Microsoft Corporation.Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 2 has been released. It caught a lot of us by surprise, perhaps, because after the Vista hype (2007) nothing in Microsoft is really getting a lot of early news. Click "Read More" for more information.

There aren't a lot of new features and benefits as there were in Service Pack 1, but it's still worth getting. There are some new updates for Bluetooth technologies, you can now burn Bluray discs natively, and wireless performance is improved when the pc returns from sleep. There are also some improvements to the wireless configuration (Windows Connect Now), and new capabilities for Direct X (Reliability and Performance). I personally can't tell too much of a difference on my Vista test system, but I haven't dug around much yet. Service Pack 2 will certainly mostly be a compilation of a lot of the past Windows updates since Service Pack 1 rather than a feature upgrade.

You shouldn't be too concerned about installing Service Pack 2, as I am not seeing any problems yet like there were on Service Pack 1. The install seems to go very quickly (even though they warn it could take an hour or more) and I have installed it on more than 10-15 computers. The obvious requirement is that you need Service Pack 1 first, and there may be a few more updates after that before it will show on your Update queue. If you are on 32bit Vista expect the download to be as much as 350MB and if you are using 64bit Vista the download will be a lot more (580MB). As always, be sure that you have restore points turned on in System Protection and that you close all programs that could interfere (Antivirus, Firewalls, SCSI/IDE Emulators, etc.). Keep frequent backups!

This may not be the last Service Pack for Vista, even though we are expecting Windows 7 soon. I suspect there could be another Service Pack for Windows XP and maybe even a third one for Vista. Microsoft in the past has gone as far as four in previous versions of Windows.
