Internet Explorer 8 Now an Important Update? PDF Print E-mail

Internet Explorer (TM) Microsoft Corporation.Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 has been out of Beta and Microsoft has suddenly thrown it in Windows Update as a High Priority (Important in Vista) update in Windows XP. I can't find any reasons why it was classified this way, but it's obvious that Microsoft is pushing it due to competition.

In my personal opinion Internet Explorer 8 Beta was horrible. I've seen it cause many problems on a lot of PCs. I've seen a lot of websites that just do not want to function or display properly. After installing it on a lot of PCs (perhaps more than 30), I've discovered my favorite browser (Hard to believe, I know). I was using Fire Fox off and on (for speed & reliability mostly), but now I only use Fire Fox for testing this site to ensure functionality.

I would have to say, the current release is very reliable and in my personal experience extremely fast. I remember when just loading IE took some extra time (although it would seem a browser should load in a flash), and IE8 on my Vista test system loads... in a flash. When you create new tabs, this too is a lot more responsive. IE8 also has a feature (compatibility mode) for displaying pages that may not look right in the modern browser. There also are of course some privacy and security features added in and they have mildly changed the look.

This also should be a pretty safe install (as far as problems go). It seems to install a lot faster than IE7 would and I haven't seen any problems. It really seems as though a lot of newer Microsoft updates released in the past couple of months have been far more reliable. Don't be afraid though if you still wish to use Fire Fox (or other browsers). IE8 is a high priority update, but it will not force an install. You have to click "Accept" before it will install and you do have the ability to click "Cancel" before it goes on your system (much like the Windows Service Packs).
